Workplace Mediation

What is the cost of this service?

Mediation is charged at £500 per day.

What is the aim of mediation?

Mediation has an 85% success rate (Doherty & Guyler, 2008). It is a structured process through which an impartial third party facilitates constructive discussion between people in dispute in order for them to resolve their conflict enough to decide upon some mutually acceptable agreements that will improve their relationship. The aim of mediation is to help resolve disputes between two or more parties, no matter the power dynamic within the relationship. As your mediator I will assist the parties to negotiate their own settlement using a structure, timetable and dynamics that ordinary negotiation lacks, whilst remaining impartial to the situation being discussed. The process is private and confidential and the details of the sessions will not be discussed within anyone else. This method can be applied in the workplace or in any situation where two parties are stuck in dispute and cannot move forward.

How does it work?

I use various techniques to open or improve dialogue between disputants, aiming to help the parties reach an agreement for a way of working together going forward. When taking place within the context of the workplace, mediation cannot take place concurrent to any formal proceedings such as grievance. If either participant is involved in any formal proceedings, these must be suspended whilst mediation takes place. Taking part in mediation does not preclude a member of staff from taking a grievance at a later stage but the contents of the mediation cannot be used in any subsequent formal or legal procedure. 

Can mediation be used in the workplace?

Mediation can be used to try and work through conflicts between any of the following:

  • employer - employee

  • employee - employee

  • team versus team

  • employer - management board/shareholders/stakeholders

  • employee/employer - third party supplier/consumer

Why does conflict occur?

Conflict can arise from a number of things, such as;

  • personality clashes

  • different expectations

  • breakdown of, or poor, communication

  • different values or maps of reality

  • personal aggression

  • external factors: re-organisation, new ways of working, new colleagues, high staff turnover etc.

What are the benefits of mediation?

Mediation is quick, confidential, creative and cost-effective. It also allows you to preserve or rebuild relationships. You do not need all of the information you might want at trial. In the workplace, mediation can increase efficiency and profitability by engaging and empowering those involved to resolve their disputes.
